How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Beet– Beta vulgaris var. vulgaris
Family Amaranthaceae (Amaranth family)

Plant Description

Beets are cool season crops typically grown for their edible root. The greens are also edible as beets are closely related to chard. Red beets are most common, though there are also striped, yellow, and white beets. Some varieties grown in California include Detroit Dark Red, Bull’s Blood, Chioggia, Burpee and Golden.

Cultural Tips

Cultural practices such as proper site selection, soil preparation, planting, and watering are important for plant health, pest management and pest reduction when growing beets.
