Key to Identifying Common Household Ants


Petiole nodes

One-node versus two-node ants:
  • The petiole is the first characteristic looked at when identifying ants.
  • Ants have either 1 or 2 petiole nodes.
  • Locate the petiole, the first portion of the abdomen, and count the number of segments present.
