How to Manage Pests
Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Manzanita, Kinnikinnick—Arctostaphylos spp.
Family Ericaceae (Heath family)
Plant identification
Arctostaphylos spp. are evergreen
groundcovers and shrubs. Many varieties are available. Characteristic
of manzanita are beautiful bell-shaped flowers and red bark.
Optimum conditions for growth
The climatic zone for Manzanita varies by
species. They do best in full sun and like well-drained soils.
Some water is required while plants are young; once plants
are established, little summer water is required. Irrigate
every 1 to 2 weeks on light, porous soils. Irrigating once
a month or less is necessary on heavier soils.
