How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Madrone—Arbutus menziesii
Strawberry tree—Arbutus unedo
Family Ericaceae (Heath family)

Plant Identification

Arbutus spp. are evergreen trees or shrubs. Plants have shedding reddish-brown bark and dark green leaves. Flowers are urn or bell-shaped and produced in white, pink, or green clusters. Yellow, orange, or red berry-like fruit are produced after bloom. Fruit is edible and attractive to birds.

Optimum conditions for growth

Arbutus spp. are often planted in lawns or raised beds. They do well in areas with full sun. In very hot areas, they require some shade. For young trees, water regularly. Once established, water deep and infrequently. Provide good drainage. Thin plants as needed.
