How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Peony—Paeonia spp.

Family Paeoniaceae (Peony family)

Plant Identification

Peonies are perennial plants or deciduous shrubs usually found in perennial borders. Leaves are divided and flowers are often large and have various colors including white, pink, red, yellow, orange, or purple. Plants may not bloom the first couple of years but should bloom every year after. Bloom is generally late spring or early summer.

Optimum conditions for growth

Peonies do well in full sun, but require afternoon shade in very hot areas. Keep plants watered regularly and allow for good air circulation around plants by cleaning up fallen leaves and pruning off old flowers. Protect flowers from strong winds. Mulch around plants to keep roots cool in warmer climate areas.
