Plant Description
Radishes are grown for their crisp, spicy root. They are fast growing and reach maturity in only a few weeks. Radishes vary greatly in size, shape and color. Plant disease resistant varieties when possible. Summer radish varieties that do well in California include Cherry Belle and Easter Egg Hybrid. Winter radish varieties tend to be larger, and white, green or black in color. Common winter varieties include Icicle and April Cross Hybrid. Most people grow radishes for the root, though the leaves and stems are also edible and can be prepared similarly to leafy greens.
