Plant Description

Chard, also called Swiss chard, are beets grown for their edible leaves. The stems can be green, red, or multicolored. Recommended varieties in California include Lucullus, Rhubarb Chard, Rainbow and Bright Lights. Leaves can be harvested at any time. Immature leaves can be braised or used as salad greens. Mature leaves are typically prepared like other dark leafy greens.
