Plant Identification

Caesalpinias are evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees. Plants grow quickly and have fernlike leaves. Flowers are produced in clusters on the ends of branches and attract hummingbirds. Blooms may be yellow, orange, or red. Caesalpinias produce poisonous seeds and pods.

Optimum conditions for growth

Caesalpinias prefer areas with full sun and require little to moderate amounts of water. Deep, infrequent watering is best. Plants grow best in light, well-drained soil. Prune in early spring to remove old growth before new growth takes off.
