In December 2019, UC IPM published three new videos on monitoring for mites, thrips, and root and crown diseases in avocado orchards. These videos provide visuals and demonstrations to help avocado growers and pest control advisers monitor these pests and make management decisions.
UC IPM staff Petr Kosina and Stephanie Parreira worked with UC Cooperative Extension Advisor Ben Faber to develop the videos and collaborated with UCCE Specialist Alireza Pourreza and German Zuniga-Ramirez with the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center to get aerial photographs and footage for these videos, as well as UC ANR Videographer Ray Lucas.
Feedback from pest control advisers who work in avocado has been generally positive.
Monitoring for Mites in Avocado Orchards summarizes the damage that mites (primarily persea mite) cause to avocados, as well as the appropriate methods and timing for monitoring mites and how to distinguish pest mites from predatory mites. This video is nearly 4 minutes long and has been viewed 245 times since it has been published.
Monitoring for Root and Crown Diseases in Avocado Orchards covers how to spot trees that may be infected with a root or crown disease, how to distinguish between different kinds of cankers, how to sample tree tissue to diagnose these diseases, and some ways to manage the diseases. About 6 minutes long, this video has been viewed over 550 times.
Monitoring for Thrips in Avocado Orchards covers the two species of thrips that damage avocados, where and when to monitor for them, and some important considerations for management and pesticide applications. This video is 6 minutes long and has been viewed over 300 times.
