Peter Goodell is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association. Nominated by the Association members, the award is given annually to honor and recognize an individual outside the Association who has made significant contributions to the cotton industry.

“Dr. Goodell is revered not just by the cotton industry, but throughout the agricultural industry for his work on integrated pest management.”—The Cotton Chronicle, June 2017 Newsletter of the California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association

The Distinguished Service Award recognized Goodell’s early research on heat unit accumulation, which led to a better understanding of the timing of pest populations. His interest in practical computer modeling translated into a model that could aid in predicting pest populations useful for making informed pest management decisions. The award recognized Goodell’s work on key cotton pests such as nematodes, thrips, spider mites and lygus bug. Goodell worked to retain pesticides important for resistance management and successful cotton production. He was also applauded for his authorship of the Cotton Pest Management Guidelines, the University’s agricultural guidelines for managing pests in cotton.

“Pete has a very long list of accomplishments that will live on for years to come, and he has had an incredible impact on the entire cotton industry. For that we are forever grateful.”— The Cotton Chronicle, June 2017 Newsletter of the California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association "
