Young avocado treesPrevent Diseases and Weeds Before Planting—Young Trees

Begin by choosing a good planting site with suitable soil.

  • Improve drainage and other soil conditions before planting.
  • Take sanitation measures to limit pathogen spread. For example, a concrete drainage ditch on a slope above an avocado grove can divert pathogen contaminated runoff water.
  • Control weeds, especially established perennials.
  • Obtain certified, disease-free nursery stock.
  • Use pathogen-resistant rootstocks.
